One would think that after two games with under par combat systems the third would show improvement. Moving on to the mechanical failures, Uncharted 3 double downs on the barely serviceable mechanics of the previous Uncharted games. Overall, the story feels like a retread that tries to reimagine but ultimately regresses. These issues probably stem from the fact that Uncharted 3 was the product of conflicting behind-the-scenes ideologies that afflicted the game’s development at the time.

Its narrative is riddled with plot holes, contrived sequences, and irritating character motivations. With that said, Uncharted 3 is the weakest story of the franchise. For all the praise the stories receive, they feel immediately dated when experienced today. But is that really such a high bar to clear?Īt their base level the Uncharted games are just white male power fantasy stories. The popular opinion among game enthusiasts (aka gamers) is that the characters, dialogue, and action sequences of the Uncharted games rival that of a Hollywood blockbuster. It earns this reputation not for its narrative content, but the execution of its narrative. Starting with the narrative failures is pertinent because the Uncharted franchise is heralded as one of the premiere examples of video game storytelling. And what better time to do this than on the 10 th anniversary of the release of Uncharted 3.Īs mentioned before, Uncharted 3 has both narrative and mechanical failures. But now that it has been established that Uncharted 3 is dreadful enough to warrant being the death knell of a franchise, we can focus on what exactly makes it so terrible.

Delusional reviews praising the game at the time of its release are a testament to this. So, if Uncharted 3 was such a misstep how did the franchise survive? The simple answer is that being one of the pillar properties of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Uncharted is too big to fail. Despite this, the Uncharted franchise after the 3 rd installment recovered and excelled with the release of subsequent games. It was also a bloated and overlong experience that can be equated to eating an ill-advised second portion of desert. The game failed to expand upon its predecessor both narratively and mechanically.

Around the 5 th time I died within the first 10 seconds of a late game combat encounter, I realized that Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception was the type of video game that would normally tank a franchise.
